Co-curricular Activities

IMG 0974

Students at St Michael's have many opportunities to become involved in activities outside the regular school curriculum. Here are some of them...

SWIMMING, ATHLETICS, CROSS COUNTRY

These are our three major sports carnivals in the school year. They are fun and active days for all children, encouraging participation and sportsmanship. All children are expected to participate at a school level. From these carnivals, squads are formed to represent St Michael's at a Diocesan level. This can then lead to Mackillop trials, Mackillop (State level in Catholic Schools) and National levels. Training squads meet before school and during lunch times.

AFL, SOCCER, NETBALL, BASKETBALL, RUGBY LEAGUE, UNION, CRICKET

St Michael's participates in Diocesan gala days in these sports. Training is organised by staff during lunch time in the weeks leading up to each event. There are also in-school sports clinics in AFL, Soccer, Rugby League and Rugby Union.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE PATHWAYS (SPORT)

Each year outstanding sporting students (ie playing in the highest division possible) in Yrs 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to nominate for the chance to attend Diocesan Sports Trials. This year trials will be held for Tennis, Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Touch, Hockey, Softball and Cricket.

The representative pathways are as follows: School-based Carnivals/Trials > Diocesan Carnivals/Trials > NSW Mackillop Carnivals/Trials > NSW PSSA State Carnivals > Australian Championships (School Sport Australia).

NSW PRIMARY SCHOOLS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Teams are selected to compete against Catholic Schools from all over NSW in this round robin style competition. Students travel with their families to a destination in NSW for a weekend not only of basketball, but also a great fun trip away with other families from our school and diocese.

SCHOOL BAND / MUSIC TUITION

Students are able to receive small group or individual tuition in musical instruments. The School Band performs at various events and functions throughout the year.

CHOIR

St Michael's has a number of choirs including our award-winning choirs at the Shoalhaven Eisteddfod, choirs for Parish and school liturgies, and Glee Club, who prepare songs for enjoyment and singing at local community gatherings and nursing homes.

PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public Speaking opportunities are offered at school, regional and Diocesan levels.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

These competitions, run by the University of NSW, take place at various times throughout the year in the areas of Spelling, Writing, English, Mathematics, Computers and Science. Schools receive feedback about students' strengths and weaknesses, and students receive a certificate with a grade of Pass, Credit or Distinction.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVITIES

A Student Environmental Group meets weekly, and are involved in projects such as the school vegetable and herb garden, the Meditation Memorial Garden, the Aboriginal Garden Project (incorporating members of our local Aboriginal community) and a recycling program involving worm farms and composting.

ENRICHMENT GROUPS

Tournament of the Minds, Maths Olympiad, Maths Enrichment Groups focusing on 'Real World Mathematics' and 'Problem Solving', knitting, woodworking.
